Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Part 8

This trip was taken between May 22, 2014 to June 10, 2014.   We wake up early to get ready and go upstairs for our breakfast buffet at the Windjammer Café. We find a seat with window views and enjoy breakfast as we sail along the Sognefjorden to our destination for today, Flam, Norway. When I finish eating I head up one deck to do my 2-mile walk and take photos of the scenery. As it is pretty cold and windy Jodi decides to stay indoors and enjoy her coffee and view from the window for a while.

We wait in a nice waiting room until we could check-in for the ferry where we snacked and ate our sandwiches before boarding. Dropping our luggage in our room we head to the outside deck so we have a nice view of Oslo and the Inner Oslofjord on our way to Copenhagen. We were rewarded with beautiful vistas and views of towns along the Fjord as the sun sets.

Thurs 5-29:

Akershus Slott

Akershus Slott

We wake up this morning a little later than usual and head out for Akershus Fortress, during our ride we notice most of the shops are closed and there is very little activity on the streets. When we arrive at the fortress we start to notice signs in windows and on doors that say this is a Holiday – Ascension Day. This Christian holiday, 39 days after Easter, commemorates Jesus Christ’s ascension into heaven. Well at least the fortress will be open but not for a few hours, so we walk around the grounds to get a feel of the place.

Nordiska Museet Interior

Nordiska Museet

Today we sleep in a little bit and then head out on the T-Bana back to the Island of Djurgaden to visit the Nordiska Museet, the Museum of Cultural History. This building built in 1907 houses about 1.5 million objects of Swedish Trends and Traditions. Walking around the 4 stories of the museum you see home interiors, jewelry, table settings, textiles, dolls, toys, textiles, folk art and many other items. We take the elevator to the top floor and investigate each floor on the way down. What an interesting way to spend the morning and early afternoon. Boy the Stockholm Card has been great, every site we visited during the stay was free along with all our transportation. Continue reading
